The Society of Gynecologic Oncology of Canada: Announcement

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 24, 2009) - The Society of Gynecologic Oncology of Canada (GOC) and the Western Association of Gynecologic Oncologists (WAGO) from the United States will be holding their first combined annual meeting Wednesday, June 24 through Saturday, June 27, 2009, at the Westin Bayshore Hotel in Vancouver, BC. This historic meeting of two of the largest North American groups dedicated to the study of gynecologic cancers will feature over 100 presentations of new data, and will be attended by over 150 gynecologic oncologists and related health care providers. A number of studies of new pharmacologic and surgical treatments for gynecologic cancers, as well as basic laboratory studies and quality of life analyses will be presented.

Gynecologic cancers will strike about 85,000 each year in the U.S. and Canada, and about 30,000 will succumb to these diseases. The mission of the GOC and the WAGO is simple: to increase our understanding of these diseases and improve the outcome by developing better treatments and better prevention strategies. This meeting allows gynecologic cancer investigators from both nations the opportunity to share new ideas in order to fulfill this mission.

Featured guest presentations will be made by internationally known cancer researchers Maurie Markman, MD, of MD Anderson Tumor Institute in Houston, Texas, and Dennis Chi, MD, of Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York, NY; as well as a special session on the role of robotic surgery for gynecologic cancer.

The meeting will also feature a special guest performance by N.E.D. (No Evidence of Disease) a rock and roll band made up of U.S. gynecologic oncologists who use their musical talents to promote the cause of gyn cancer understanding. N.E.D. has recently recorded their first original CD on the Motema Records label, which is due for release in September, 2009. GOC/WAGO attendees will be among the first to hear the new music on Friday, June 26 at 9:00pm at the Westin Bayshore Hotel Ballroom.

Also on Friday June 24th is the GOC's 8th annual Run for Her Life ™ event, a fundraising 5km run/3 km walk organized during the Joint WAGO/GOC Annual Meeting in Vancouver. The goals of this event are to increase awareness about gynecologic cancers, to demonstrate commitment to wellness and fitness and to enjoy the local environment with our colleagues. This year, proceeds from the event will be donated to the BC Cancer Foundation to support endometrial cancer research.

This annual meeting marks the 30th for the GOC, and coincides with the launch of the Society's name change from the Society from The Society of Gynecologic Oncologists of Canada to The Society of Gynecologic Oncology of Canada.

William (Rusty) Robinson, MD, of Amarillo, Texas and Jason Dodge, MD, of Toronto, Ontario are co-Chairs of the meeting. They will be available to the media, along with individual investigators, on request throughout the meeting. N.E.D. will be available to the media by request on Friday afternoon, June 26.
