The Ultimate Holiday Gift for the Military Buff: a Flight Back in Time to D-Day

FARMINGDALE, NY--(Marketwire - November 24, 2009) - This Christmas some history buffs may find a time machine under their tree that brings them back to D-Day.

The American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport, Farmingdale, New York, is offering the ultimate present for the military buff, a $300 membership that offers a flight experience on the museum's operational C-47 warbird that actually flew over the Normandy beaches the morning of D-Day, June 6th, 1944. Redeemable on the eve of the invasion's anniversary next year, those who climb aboard are put into period uniforms and joined by "Airborne" living historians who will make the 40 minute flight as realistic as possible short of parachuting out over Fire Island.

Jeff Clyman, museum president, stated, "This is a time machine, pure and simple. From the uniforms, to the vintage aircraft, to the sound of General Eisenhower wishing you Godspeed, this puts you in the boots of young Americans on the verge of liberating Europe in 1944. Our volunteers are authentically uniformed right down to the smudges on their face smeared on to give them a better chance of surviving the Normandy hedgerows at night. There is no other place in the nation where this kind of historic experience is offered."

The museum's $300 membership level creates "flight orders" that can be presented at Christmas or Chanukah with instructions to report when the D-Day anniversary is observed. The museum's C-47 pilot, Jim Vocell, reminds those considering a flight experience, "When ties and slippers don't work as a gift it's time for the Airborne!"

Sandy Johnson of the Bronx, New York, who purchased museum membership as a gift in 2008 explained, "There was no way I was going to get Arthur (her husband) another scarf. He spends hours in front of the History Channel watching programs about World War II. Now he has his own piece of history."

The American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport is at 1230 New Highway, Farmingdale, south of Conklin Avenue. With its squadron of operational World War II aircraft it is open Thursday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. Admission is $5 for children, $8 for vets and seniors and $10 for adults. Group tour rates are available by contacting the museum through its web site at
