The Washington Post Names Helen Thorpe's "Just Like Us" One of the Best Books of 2009

DENVER, CO--(Marketwire - December 23, 2009) - "Just Like Us: The True Story of Four Mexican Girls Coming of Age in America," Helen Thorpe's engrossing journal of the tumultuous lives of four best friends growing up in Denver -- one born in the U.S., another with a Green Card, and the other two children of undocumented immigrants from Mexico -- has been named by the Washington Post as one of the best books of 2009 and was selected for its 2009 Holiday Gift Guide.

Ms. Thorpe, a naturalized citizen herself, follows four young Mexican/American women through their high school experience in Denver, journaling their lives at school, at home and in the community for five years. "Just Like Us" thrusts the reader into the emotional roller coaster of the girls' high school days, chronicles their interactions with two diverse cultures and, for two of the friends, paints the fear of deportation that children of illegal immigrant families face every day.

"Just Like Us" (Scribner, 387 pages, $27.99) was also named as one of the Five Best Books in the West in 2009 by New West. "Just Like Us" is available in hardback at Borders, Barnes & Noble and other bookstores and online at Amazon.com and other online outlets.
