The Weather's Ups and Downs...Quite a Challenge for Letter Carriers!

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Jan. 18, 2008) - No doubt about it! Even though the climatic conditions are warming up, winter, on the other hand, is stay! Not only that, but the weather keeps changing from snowstorm, to rain, to mild temperature to biting cold. And your letter carrier is like an equilibrist on your stairs and in your icy and snow-covered pathways!

How many times have you had difficulty climbing the steps to your house? Now imagine your letter carrier's situation. Letter carriers walk about 10 km a day and deliver to some 800 doors and thus run major risks during the winter. This situation is even more critical because they carry heavy volumes of mail in their bags, sometimes up to 16 kg (35 lbs), thereby limiting their movements and forcing them to balance like an equilibrist.

Last year, 395 slips and falls due to winter weather conditions were recorded by letter carriers in Quebec. Many falls can have serious consequences, cause major injuries and even force some letter carriers to be off work for a long time.

With the cooperation of each of you, the number of injuries resulting from slips and falls could be significantly reduced. Please take a few minutes of your time to clear the snow and ice from the access to your mailbox and thus ensure the safety of your letter carrier and the delivery of your mail.

This winter, try to prevent your letter carrier from becoming an equilibrist!

- Keep all obstacles, such as your shovel and garbage, away from your
- Clean and remove ice from your stairs;
- If possible, spread sand instead of salt, because salt makes water that
can then freeze and make the access to your mailbox very slippery;
- Remove hanging icicles.

Note: Letter carriers are available for interviews.
