Their Excellencies to Host the First Art Matters Public Forum in Montreal

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 23, 2010) - Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond will host today, at 6:00 p.m., the first Art Matters public forum to be held in Montréal, at the Société des arts technologiques (SAT). The event will honour the recipients of this year's Governor General's Performing Arts Awards.

Organized in collaboration with Culture pour tous, this Art Matters public forum will enable awards recipients, various representatives of the performing arts industry and members of the public to explore the theme, "Citizens, to the arts! (Re)Connecting citizens, artists and the arts".

"Culture must be able to express itself everywhere and always, and be accessible to as many people as possible, for it bears within it our choices, our hopes, our memory and our imagination," said the Governor General. "This Art Matters forum will highlight promising avenues for strengthening interaction among the creators, actors and spectators of this culture that unites us."

Mr. Lafond added that, "Every day, creators, teachers, managers and researchers work successfully to whet the public's appetite for culture. They propose taking roads less travelled by, off the beaten path, exploring all new platforms to reach citizens where they live, and inviting them to these enchanted places."

The panellists for this Art Matters forum include Simon Brault, Director General of the National Theatre School of Canada; Frédérick Gravel, dancer and choreographer; Patricia Perez, artist and mediator at TOHU; Gisèle Rucker, Academy Director at the Segal Centre; and Monique Savoie, President and Chief Executive Officer, SAT. The moderator for the discussion will be Anne Lagacé Dowson, Montréal radio host.

Performance by SAT[MixSessions] collective and Ricardo Lamour (Emrical)

Thanks to the collaboration of SAT, three members of the SAT[MixSessions] collective, VJs Paul Frigon, a.k.a FRIGO, ZongGuang Zhao, a.k.a SAKARA, and DJ Alex, will offer a visual and audio performance during the evening.

SAT[MixSessions] is a gathering point open to creators in tune with innovative approaches. Over the past seven years, the group has developed a wealth of artistic and technical expertise, which is recognized and sought after by members of Montréal's digital scene.

Ricardo Lamour, musician and participant of the Order of Canada Mentorship Program, will also perform.

Mr. Lamour, a.k.a Emrical, is an artist and activist who strongly believes in the importance of shaking things up in the present to improve the future. He is involved in several citizen intervention projects and in the search for social justice.
