Thieves Target Christmas Tools in Overnight Van Raids

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 20, 2009) - UK van drivers are being warned of the dangers of leaving brand new tools in their van overnight.

Swinton, the UK's leading high street retailer of commercial vehicle insurance, saw a 13% hike in claims in the first week of January last year, which it believes is a result of damage to vans from attempted theft of brand new tools bought as Christmas presents.

Swinton is urging van drivers to remove tools, old and new from their vans overnight to reduce the chances of a break in and a possible van insurance claim.

Swinton is also advising van drivers to take out additional tool cover to protect the cost of replacing tools that may be stolen.

Swinton is offering the following tips to prevent a van break in:

- Where possible lock the van in a secure garage

- Remove tools from your van overnight

- Use a no tools left in vehicle overnight sticker

Phil Moss, commercial vehicle insurance Manager at Swinton, said:" Van drivers need to be more security conscious after Christmas when thieves are likely to target in the hope of stealing brand new tools. It is really important that van drivers remember to remove tools from the back of the van overnight to reduce the risk of damage to vans."
