Thousands of Pets Got a "Second Chance for Love" During PetSmart Charities® National Adoption Weekend

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwire - February 16, 2010) - More than 16,500 homeless dogs, cats and small animals found loving homes during the PetSmart Charities® Second Chance for Love National Adoption Weekend February 12-14. The event was proudly sponsored by Hill's® Science Diet® Brand and PetSmart® and was held in all 1,149 PetSmart® stores in the United States and Canada. The total number of adoptions at press time was 16,534.

More than 2,000 animal-welfare agencies throughout North America participated in the event held in every PetSmart Charities in-store adoption center with a goal of finding homes for 16,100 pets. That goal was exceeded, making the first national adoption weekend of 2010 a resounding success. Additionally, 14 PetSmart® locations also hosted expanded parking lot events with even more room to showcase available pets. PetSmart® stores with the highest adoption numbers included: San Antonio, Texas with 102 adoptions; Evansville, Ind. with 84 adoptions; Lexington, Ky. with 76 adoptions; Oviedo, Fla. with 68 adoptions; and Irving, Texas with 62 adoptions.

"We are so happy to see that so many homeless pets got the second chances they deserve," said Susana Della Maddalena, executive director of PetSmart Charities, Inc. "So many shelters and rescue groups are filled to capacity, and it's a great feeling to know that PetSmart Charities and our partner animal-welfare organizations were able to help find lifelong, loving homes for these pets."

In the U.S. alone, an estimated 6 to 8 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters each year, but 3 to 4 million never find homes. During the last 15 years, the PetSmart Charities Adoption Centers have found homes for more than 4 million pets. For every minute that the Adoption Centers are open, one pet's life is saved.

"At PetSmart Charities, we are strong advocates for adopting rather than purchasing a new pet," added Della Maddalena. "The national adoption weekends give prospective pet parents the opportunity to find a great pet who will complete their families and bring them unconditional love."

PetSmart Charities will host three more national adoption weekends during 2010 on April 30-May 2; September 10-12; and November 12-14. All three remaining events will be sponsored by Hill's Science Diet Brand and PetSmart®.
