Tired of Driving-One in Five Van Drivers Admits Lack of Sleep

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Aug. 22, 2010) - One in five van drivers have taken to the roads while feeling tired, according to Swinton Commercial.

A poll of 1,200 van insurance customers, revealed 21% of van drivers admitted lack of sleep and long hours meant they got behind the wheel while feeling tired.

One in five van drivers admitted to driving while feeling tired in the last month, while only a quarter of drivers admitted to taking regular breaks on long journeys. The general advice is to take a break every 2-3 hours of a long journey.

These latest statistics come at a time when road safety charity, Brake, is launching a new campaign called Wake Up UK! aimed at highlighting the dangers of tired driving. According to Brake, tired drivers are responsible for at least one in ten fatal crashes on UK roads and shockingly this statistic increases to one in five on motorways.

Phil Moss, Commercial Vehicle Manager at Swinton said: "Taking regular breaks while driving is essential for all motorists. By the very nature of their job, van drivers are prone to being on the road for longer hours than the average driver so it's key they make regular stops. Driving when tired can seriously impair a person's ability to drive. It can affect co-ordination, reduce reaction time, impair judgement and can drastically increase the risk of an accident."

Swinton is offering the following advice to van drivers:

  • Plan your journeys and allow for adequate rest stops, which should be taken every 2-3 hours on a long journey.

  • Have a good night sleep, or day sleep if you work nights, before you are schedule to go on a long journey.

  • When you do take a break stop for as long as you feel is adequate to get enough rest.

  • Never ever drive tired, research from Brake shows that if you drive tired it is impossible to stop yourself eventually nodding off at the wheel.
