Toronto Education Workers Applaud Trustees

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 11, 2010) - Local 4400, CUPE, Toronto Education Workers, applauds the Trustees at the Toronto District School Board who voted to refuse to cut the 140 Regular Program Educational Assistants at their regular Board meeting last night.

President John Weatherup stated "It was gratifying to see the Trustees do the right thing". He continued, "These are our system's most vulnerable children – primary school students who come from high needs backgrounds, who may not speak English as a first language or who have not yet been tested and provided with special education assistance".

Unit C Vice President Giselle Burton added "Last year the Board removed 150 full time equivalent positions, and we have been told that the children, parents and teachers have really struggled with that loss".

Anna Hutchison, also a Unit C Vice President, noted: "Because the Trustees stood up for the children in Kindergarten through Grade 3 who needed ongoing special help, they will get the support that they need and deserve."

"While we are pleased that the deficit fight is not going to be on the backs of vulnerable young students, it only makes the review of the inadequate funding formula more pressing than ever", concluded John Weatherup.
