Toronto Explosions

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 10, 2008) - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, made the following statement today after a series of explosions at a propane facility caused the evacuation of a residential neighbourhood.

"On behalf of the Government of Canada I would like to extend my sympathies to all those who were affected by this disaster. Our prayers are with the family and loved ones of the Toronto Fire Services member who died in responding to the incident. The safety and security of citizens and communities are foremost on our minds and we continue to monitor the situation closely. I wish to commend the professionalism, dedication and tremendous sacrifice of first responders and emergency personnel, who performed remarkably in dealing with this situation.

While first responders are best placed to address the immediate needs of citizens in the affected area, the Government of Canada stands ready to provide additional assistance."
