Toronto Hydro Invests in Conservation to Help Social Housing Services Corporation Advance Energy Efficiency to Vulnerable Communities

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2007) - Toronto Hydro-Electric System Ltd. is pleased to announce it is providing up to a $394,000 investment to the Social Housing Services Corporation (SHSC) under Toronto Hydro's Conservation and Demand Management (CDM) program. The incentive will be used to implement initiatives that will reduce electricity demand in SHSC member properties in the City of Toronto by over one megawatt (MW) by December 31, 2007.

The incentive will help replace 25,000 old, incandescent light bulbs in 5000 social housing units across the city, with CSA-approved EnergyStar compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). The electricity savings realized can be compared to the amount of electricity needed to power 781 single-family homes. The program will assist SHSC and social housing landlords to manage their costs as utility prices increase.

In addition, the incentive will be used by SHSC to implement, administer and monitor an education campaign for both tenants and maintenance staff on the benefits of energy conservation. Experience has shown that education and information is critical to ensuring success on maintaining energy conservation measures among tenant populations.

David O'Brien, President and Chief Executive Officer, Toronto Hydro Corporation, says, "This incentive reflects our company's desire to work with our most vulnerable citizens to help them enjoy the many benefits of energy conservation. While changing light bulbs is a simple thing to do, it can also create significant reductions in electricity use."

Roger Maloney, Chair, Social Housing Services Corporation, says, "The generous support from Toronto Hydro is helping to kick start a culture of conservation in social housing. By working together we are giving social housing residents and landlords the tools to lower their energy use, reduce costs and green house gas emissions."

Replacing old, inefficient light bubs with new, energy efficient ones will save significant amounts of electricity, and help the City of Toronto reduce greenhouse gas emissions - a critical part of the City of Toronto's climate plan.
