Troon Golf Scores Hole in One With Fortinet Network Security and Email Solution

International Golf Company Deploys FortiGate Unified Threat Management and FortiMail Email Security Systems to Protect Core and Distributed Network Consisting of 1,500 Users

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - January 21, 2008) - Fortinet® -- a pioneer and leading provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions -- today announced that Troon Golf, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing, has deployed Fortinet FortiGate™ multi-threat security appliances to help protect its corporate network and distributed network of 65 of its golf courses from malicious Internet attacks and a FortiManager™ centralized management system has been deployed to manage all the FortiGate appliances. In addition, Fortinet's FortiMail™ has been deployed to help secure company-wide email servers and Internet access for its 1,500 computer users.

Troon Golf was previously using a frame relay network for its private wide area network connectivity, Cisco routers, a GNAT box appliance for its firewall needs and antivirus was only managed at a desktop level. In an effort to minimize costs at 65 of its sites, the company looked at an all-in-one solution that could replace multiple vendor appliances at each location and implement a VPN solution within one unified threat management system. Fortinet was selected to provide firewall, antivirus and IPSec VPN connectivity for its headquarters in Scottsdale, Ariz. and at 65 of its remote golf courses located throughout the United States.

Located at the Scottsdale headquarters is a FortiGate-500 appliance, which is helping to provide antivirus, firewall and IPSec VPN protection for the main network. In addition, using the IPSec VPN capability, Troon Golf can remotely service the golf courses if there is a network problem.

"Since our Fortinet deployment, we are saving on average $250,000 a year in communications costs alone," said Cary Westmark, vice president of technology at Troon Golf.

Fortinet FortiGate-60 and FortiGate-100A appliances are deployed at 65 of Troon Golf managed golf courses located throughout the United States. The FortiGate appliances are helping to provide antivirus, firewall and IPSec VPN protection for the golf course networks and allowing employees to securely connect to the network at headquarters to access the corporate email servers, human resources & payroll systems and the company's intranet. To manage the FortiGate appliances, Troon Golf is using Fortinet's FortiManager which centrally manages the remote appliances.

Troon Golf was previously using another vendor's desktop software solution for antivirus protection, but realized that there was a plethora of spam clogging the corporate network because there was no spam protection at the network border. With the previous success of the Fortinet appliances, Troon Golf once again turned to Fortinet. Fortinet's FortiMail-400 solution is located at headquarters and is delivering a wealth of reliable and high performance features to detect, tag and help block spam messages and their malicious attachments for the more than 1,500 computer users at Troon Golf.

"Since deploying FortiMail we have seen a positive and dramatic change in the stability of our email server. FortiMail is blocking roughly 30,000 spam emails a day -- that's more than ten million less junk emails a year our employees have to be bothered with," continued Westmark.

Fortinet's FortiMail appliance is a complete email security device with models for every size of network. By working in conjunction with the FortiGuard services, FortiMail devices can inspect email traffic to block unwanted spam, information-stealing phishing scams, dangerous viruses, and a host of other email-borne threats. The FortiMail family offers on-box storage and archiving capacity, bidirectional inspection, high availability, device-based licensing, and flexible deployment options including a transparent mode of operation.

"We are seeing a growing demand for our FortiGate appliances and FortiMail throughout our customer base due to the increase in the amount of Internet attacks as well as the proliferation of spam," said Karl Soderlund, vice president of Americas sales and global alliances for Fortinet. "With Fortinet's FortiGate and FortiMail solutions, enterprises can be assured they are receiving broad network and email security functionality for the protection of corporate information."
