True North Gems Recovers 110 Tonne Sapphire Mini-Bulk Sample from Baffin Island

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - May 16, 2006) - True North Gems (TSX VENTURE:TGX) is pleased to announce the filing of a 43-101 report detailing the results of the 2005 exploration program on the Company's 9.9 km2 sapphire property located near the hamlet of Kimmirut, along the south coast of Baffin Island, Canada. These results include the discovery and confirmation of twelve gem corundum occurrences, including blue, colourless, pink, and yellow sapphire, as well as the discovery of gem-quality cobaltian spinel, the recovery of an approximately 110 tonne mini bulk sample, and 221 metres of diamond core drilling.

Bulk Sampling

In 2005, True North Gems successfully collected a total mini-bulk sample with an estimated field weight of 110 tonnes of sapphire mineralization from its main Beluga occurrence. Processing of 22.5 tonnes of a high grade split of the 2005 sample now been completed through the use of standard mineral extraction techniques at the laboratory of SGS Lakefield Research Ltd., Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

From the processing of the 22.5 tonne mini bulk sample split, a total of 118 kilograms of DMS concentrate was delivered to True North. This material is now undergoing a series of optic-sorting and attrition milling tests carried out at the Cornwall School of Mines in Tremough, United Kingdom, and at Scan & Sort GmbH in Hamburg, Germany. The rough gem concentrate from the 22.5 tonne mini bulk sample is expected to be delivered to True North's Vancouver office shortly for final stone count data and gemmological analysis.

Prospecting and Drilling

In 2005, True North staff developed its primary exploration tools, consisting of ultraviolet prospecting for scapolite, determined to be a fluorescent indicator mineral for sapphire, and heavy mineral content sampling for high density corundum of the alluvium and colluvium in the vicinity of geologic lode targets. Both methods proved highly effective in discovering and demarcating the dozen sapphire occurrences located on the property. The twelve sapphire occurrences are located within 4 geographic clusters of scapolite-sapphire mineralization. The largest cluster at the main Beluga showing measures 250 by 600 metres and is exposed over an elevation range of 50 metres.

True North also undertook a small drilling program consisting of 8 holes for a total of 221 metres. The purpose of the drilling was to confirm the existence of sapphires at depth. The drilling was successful with visible sapphire in one drill hole measuring up to 7 x 2.5 mm, and 80 metres of scapolite-sapphire mineralization throughout. Continued testing of the drill core is ongoing.

True North continued to map its sapphire occurrences and in doing so located a gem quality cobaltian spinel showing (previously announced November 17, 2005). The discovery of additional gemstones confirms the potential for the Baffin property to become a world class gem district.
