Turner Construction Hoists Final Steel Beam to Top-Off the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro Hospital

SOMERSET, NJ--(Marketwire - December 3, 2009) - In just over a year after the groundbreaking of the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro (UMCPP) hospital, Turner Construction joined President and CEO Barry S. Rabner of Princeton HealthCare System, HOK/RMJM and other onlookers today to witness the hoisting of the final beam to complete the steel structure of the prestigious hospital.

Nestled on a 160-acre healthcare campus, the 630,000 square-foot hospital is surrounded by a conjoined medical office building, educational center, health and fitness center, skilled nursing facility and a 32-acre public park.

Inside the hospital, plans integrate evidence-based design that assists in the healing process and also affects the way healthcare is both received and delivered. The facility contains eight "Centers of Care" that focus on specific clinical specialties that have entrances through the main concourse of the building. The Centers of Care are labeled as Cancer, Cardiac and Pulmonary Care, Neuroscience, Maternal-Child Health, Surgery, Emergency Services, Eating Disorders and Testing and Treatment.

"This is an exciting milestone on our journey to create one of the finest regional hospitals in the United States," said Barry S. Rabner, Princeton HealthCare System President and CEO. "Just as this beam occupies the high point of our hospital, so this hospital will soon occupy the high point of care for our region."

In addition to the evidence-based design, the hospital has many sustainable features, including an energy efficient curtainwall system, rainwater piping system for toilets, photovoltaic panels, high-efficiency motors, transformers, lighting and air handling ducts, and co-generation, or the generation two types of energy (heat and electricity) from a single source of fuel.

"The [UMCPP] project is one of the first of its kind," said Thomas V. Reilly Vice President and General Manager of Turner Construction. "Together with the Princeton Healthcare System, HOK/RMJM and the dedicated consultants and subcontractors of this project, we look forward to the completion of a hospital that prevents illness, maintains health, delivers exceptional care, and supports the families of the surrounding community."
