UFCW Canada has joined the Immigrant Workers Centre of Montreal in answering the international call for help with an immediate donation of $10,000 to assist in the efforts on the ground following the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12.

"Our hearts reach out to the people of Haiti, and to the hundreds of UFCW Canada members with family there," said Wayne Hanley, the National President of UFCW Canada. "We offer our condolences to the people of Haiti as well as to Canadian families who have lost loved ones in this tragedy."

"The members of the Immigrant Workers Centre share in the widespread dismay and sadness we are all witnessing in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti," said Jill Hanley of the Immigrant Workers Centre. "As an organization that works to further migrant rights, we pledge to continue to work in solidarity with the Haitian community of Montreal to support workers' rights as Haitian workers struggle to aid their family and friends back home."

"The UFCW Canada National Council and Immigrant Workers Centre donation of $10,000 to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) is just a start. It is in addition to the estimated tens of thousands of dollars already donated individually by UFCW Canada members and local unions across Canada. Since the beginning of this disaster we have been mobilizing to encourage our 250,000-plus members across the country to donate where they can," says Hanley.

"In the days and months ahead, UFCW Canada, its local unions, UFCW Canada members and the Immigrant Workers Centre will continue to stand with Haitian Canadians and the people of Haiti in their time of need."
