UFW Endorses AOC Office of the General Counsel Attorney Robert Retana for San Francisco Superior Court Judge

Accomplished Litigator Acknowledged as a Long-Time Advocate for Latino Issues and UFW

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - April 20, 2010) -  Robert Retana, an attorney for the Office of the General Counsel of the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC), announced today that he is proud to have received the endorsement of the United Farm Workers (UFW) in his race for San Francisco Superior Court Judge. The election takes place on June 8, 2010.

Mr. Retana has litigated both civil and criminal cases, among which he has successfully fought for victims of hate crimes in San Francisco. This notable example involved a Latino family that had been harassed for several years by a neighbor. He also represented the UFW, Dolores Huerta, and a group of San Francisco artists in a case against a large Internet company, alleging that the Internet image-vendor illegally offered their images and trademarks for sale without their permission.

Mr. Retana has given back to the community in many ways, including his service as a Board Member for the La Raza Centro Legal, his membership on the San Francisco Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area, his role as a former Board Member of the San Francisco La Raza Lawyers, and his longtime membership in Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Bar Association).

"We wholeheartedly support Mr. Robert Retana for San Francisco Superior Court Judge," said UFW President Arturo Rodriguez. "He is an experienced, well-rounded attorney who has represented a wide range of clients, including low income individuals on a pro bono basis, the UFW, and victims of domestic violence. He has also handled complex lawsuits for large companies."

According to Rodriguez, another important quality is that Mr. Retana has never forgotten his humble beginnings, which are similar to those of the working families represented by the UFW. "Here is a person who has always strived for excellence, graduating from Columbia University and the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law," said Rodriguez. "San Francisco needs a person of his caliber so that members of our diverse, multicultural society can trust that our justice system is indeed a fair system."

"I am honored to have the support of the UFW," said Mr. Retana. "I come from a very humble background, where there was little to no expectation for someone like me to graduate from college and go on to become a successful attorney. My experience as a civil litigator and former Assistant District Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco, working in two of the Bay Area's most prestigious law firms, and my service as Judge Pro Tem, has prepared me to serve on the bench as a San Francisco Superior Court Judge."

Mr. Retana currently provides legal advice and services to judges and courts within the California judicial system.
