UJA-Federation of New York Responds to Urgent Need to Aid Survivors of Haiti Earthquake

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - January 15, 2010) - In response to the devastation and loss caused by the earthquake in Haiti, UJA-Federation of New York has created the Haiti Relief Fund. One hundred percent of the money raised will be applied to relief efforts for Haiti.

Earlier this week, UJA-Federation took steps to help send an Israeli relief team of medical, search-and-rescue, and post-trauma counseling experts to assist survivors. We will continually reassess the needs in Haiti and direct funds to where they are needed most in cooperation with the organizations best equipped to help. Funds will be used to provide such services as food, water, and clothing; medical support; and psycho-trauma counseling and training.

"Our core values and belief in tzedakah, justice, and tikkun olam, repairing the world, demand that we come together to bring light and hope to a people who have endured far too much," said John S. Ruskay, executive vice president and CEO of UJA-Federation of New York. "Just as we responded in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the tsunami in Southeast Asia, we will once again ask our community to join a Jewish response to a natural disaster of massive proportions. We are reminded yet again that there are moments when being a citizen of this earth erases all borders and boundaries -- geographic, ethnic, and religious."
