UNICEF Workers Available to Discuss Natural Disasters, Relief Efforts in Asia-Pacific

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 2, 2009) - UNICEF is now on the ground in eight countries and territories providing emergency services and supplies to address the urgent needs of affected children and families in the wake of devastating storms, earthquakes and tsunamis in the Asia-Pacific Region.

In the Philippines, UNICEF is preparing $1.3 million additional supplies to assist children and families displaced by Typhoon Ketsana. The storm has now affected 629,000 families or over 3 million individuals. We are also prepositioning people and supplies to prepare for the coming Typhoon Pepeng/Parma. UNICEF has staff on standby in North Luzon, and family kits containing cooking pots, blankets, water buckets, sleeping mats and soap; ready to be distributed to those displaced.

UNICEF spokespeople in Indonesia, the Philippines and Samoa are currently available for interviews with Canadian media.
