Unite Reaction to the Government's Announcement on New Nuclear Build

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Jan. 10, 2008) - Unite national officer, Dougie Rooney, says:

"We welcome the government's support for a new generation of nuclear power stations. The government has consulted the union fully and comprehensively on this issue and we pledge to support them in any challenge that may come from Greenpeace.

We would like to see the government set out a bolder vision with clear deadlines to enable companies to plan for new nuclear reactors.

With the right support the UK could have its first new nuclear reactor generating electricity by 2018. This would mean the UK could offset the reduction in electricity from coal fired power stations and reduce our dependency on gas at an early stage.

A new energy policy means the demand for people with craft and technical engineering skills will be massive. We are also calling on the government to ensure that a new generation of nuclear reactors creates high skilled, well paid work for the UK."
