Unite comment on proposed closure of Polestar Greaves print department

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Jan. 8, 2008) - Unite, the union for graphical, paper and media workers, has said it is 'devastated' at today's announcement that Polestar Greaves proposes to close of its print department in Scarborough which may result in 190 job losses.

The company which produces magazines and newspaper supplements currently employs 380 employees and this proposal will mean a reduction of 50%. The remaining employees will continue to operate within the Finishing Department.

Commenting on the proposed closure of the press room, Unite National Officer, Vernon Robson, said:

"This is another blow for manufacturing, the print industry and our members in Scarborough. These are some of the best paid jobs in the Scarborough area and will be difficult to replace.

"We will be meeting with our union officials immediately to determine our response to the proposed closure and we will seek urgent meetings with the management to minimise job losses."
