Unite host raising the game conference to secure more partnership agreements in West Midlands

WEST MIDLANDS, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Nov. 2, 2007) -

Unite, the UK's largest trade union, and VAST (Voluntary Action Stoke on Trent) are to co-host a pioneering conference aimed at securing partnership agreements.

The event which will be held at The Quality Hotel in Hanley on Monday 5th November will bring together voluntary organisations from across Staffordshire to discuss ways in which partnership agreements between the union and employers can benefit both.

This event will be a follow up to an earlier launch of the collaborative project. There will be a wide range of issues discussed around employment rights and the funding of long term projects in the sector.

The conference is the first of its kind in the UK and has been organised by the union in conjunction with VAST, with the assistance of Wider Impact as the managing agent.

Rachael Maskell, Unite National Officer for the Voluntary Sector said: "Unite, as a modern trade union works closely with the third sector to not only enhance the daily working lives of those that work for charities and other not for profit organisations, but also for the good of the organisations themselves. Whether improving funding mechanisms, or enabling those that work and volunteer for these organisations to engage in skills training, a partnership with Unite adds value to all."

The West Midlands has 18,300 voluntary and community sector organisations and an unpaid workforce of 435,000.

Sam Plank, Presenter for Focal Radio said: "Volunteers often look at the work they do as insignificant and yet many businesses, organisations and families would not flourish without their support and commitment. Today is all about giving them the chance to realise they are not alone, that help is at hand for them and that they can have similar rights to paid employees. Our community of Staffordshire and Cheshire could not develop without the help of volunteers - something that our new radio station "Focal Radio" will champion when we go on-air in 2008."

Notes to editors:
Organisations attending will include MENCAP, YMCA and Stoke on Trent City Council.
