Unite reaction to BP job cuts announcement

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Oct. 24, 2007) -

Graham Tran, Unite regional officer for the oil industry, said:

"Unite is today calling on BP to set up a forum or network to allow the 350 staff, who are to lose their jobs the opportunity to market their skills and experience within the oil and gas industry.

"Most committed companies in the North Sea are struggling to recruit and retain staff, so they must as a matter of urgency get access to this resource. There is absolutely no reason for any one of these jobs to be lost from the industry. If BP do not set up such a forum then this will be seen as a betrayal of loyal staff.

"Unite demand that BP deal with this process in a proper and sympathetic fashion and certainly not like the mayhem that we are witnessing in Shell, where they are trying to shed staff through the sale of assets."
