Unite shows Northern Rock international solidarity

NEWCASTLE, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Sept. 27, 2007) - Unite the union has invited the General Secretary of the Zambian Union of Finance and Allied Workers (ZUFIAW) to show support for the employees of Northern Rock in Newcastle on Friday (28th September).

Joyce Nonde of the ZUFIAW will visit a branch of Northern Rock in Newcastle in a show of solidarity for the hard working employees of the bank.

Unite National Officer, Karen Reay, says: "Our members at Northern Rock are committed to the long term security of the bank. This visit to a Newcastle branch by a senior Zambian trade unionist is recognition of the hard work of staff through a time of difficulty. Without the commitment of staff Northern Rock could not have given their customers the professional service seen in the last few weeks.

"At a time when speculation about the future of Northern Rock is rife Unite continues to challenge management to ensure the interests of staff are taken into consideration and their futures are protected".

Unite is calling on Northern Rock to be open and transparent. The union is extremely concerned that Northern Rock's assets might be broken up and that a consortium of hedge funds have expressed an interest in the bank's mortgage book.

At a meeting last week with Unite the union, Northern Rock has agreed to pay staff double pay for overtime during the period of the crisis. Unite is also seeking assurances on job security and clarity on the future of staff at the bank.
