Unite supports call for creation of Minister for Housing

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - June 07, 2007) - Unite (Amicus section) Assistant General Secretary, Gail Cartmail, said:

"Unite will support Nick Brown's call for the creation of a new Minister for Housing at Cabinet level. We would similarly like to see governments' commitment and support for the 'Fourth Option'.

"Unite have been working with Defend Council Housing and have been calling for more decent, affordable, secure and accountable council housing to be made available."

Jon Cruddas, Deputy Leadership candidate, said:
"The housing crisis is our biggest public policy failure and now has to be our most urgent priority.
"A Cabinet role dedicated to housing can begin to give the issue the urgent attention it deserves."

Notes to Editors:

Definition of 'Fourth Option' is to ensure that all local authorities can:
1. Improve all existing council homes and estates;
2. Start a new council house building programme;
3. Have sufficient funds to maintain all council homes in future years.
