United States Olympic Committee and Ad Council Launch Anti-Steroid Social Media Campaign and National Sweepstakes

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO--(Marketwire - February 7, 2011) - The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the Ad Council announced today the launch of new social media channels and a national sweepstakes as part of its ongoing public awareness campaign focused on preventing teen steroid use. Not only are steroids a potential health hazard, they raise many ethical implications. The Play Asterisk Free (http://www.PlayAsteriskFree.com) campaign, targeting High School age teens, aims to make steroids socially unacceptable.

The Play Asterisk Free anti-steroids campaign is launching new social media channels on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/PlayAsteriskFree) and Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/AsteriskFree) highlighting the pitfalls and dangerous health risks of illegal steroid use. A new Facebook app will engage teens, high school sports teams, college athletes and aspiring Olympians to become involved with the campaign's message and to pledge to stay steroid-free.

A national Play Asterisk Free sweepstakes will give teens a chance to win prizes and learn how taking steroids makes you a fake. The anti-steroid trivia-based sweepstakes launches February 7th and runs for five weeks. Eligible entrants have an opportunity to win prizes including official Team USA branded gear.

Originally launched in 2008, The Play Asterisk Free campaign, formerly known as the Don't Be An Asterisk, included TV, radio, print and Internet PSAs in an effort to shift teens' perception around steroid use. The newly updated program and social media channels will be supported by online banners and print advertising posted throughout 250 U.S. High Schools.

"The launch of our social media efforts will better connect us directly with teenagers and youth and convey this urgent anti-steroid message in a relevant way," said Peggy Conlon, President & CEO, the Ad Council.
