University of Maryland Grants Link Plus Exclusive Worldwide License to MIPs Technology for Viral Threat Detection

Company Expands Homeland Security Applications

COLUMBIA, MD--(Marketwire - January 22, 2008) - Link Plus Corporation announced today that the University of Maryland has granted the Company an exclusive, worldwide license for Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) developed for the binding, separation, and subsequent detection, of viruses and bacteria. Link Plus will focus on commercializing products that help detect and identify viral threats to homeland security. This Agreement, along with an existing exclusive license with The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) for MIPs technology used to detect chemical and explosive threats, makes Link Plus the most comprehensive source of MIPs-related threat detection solutions available today. Link Plus now develops MIPs detection solutions for explosives, chemical agents, toxins, poisons, and pesticides and, with this license, biological agents as well.

Link Plus Corporation was granted this license as part of the University's aggressive tech transfer effort, which moves breakthrough technological developments out of the University environment and into the private sector for commercial development, particularly by companies located in the State of Maryland.

Scientists at the University have already been successful in detecting viruses using MIPs technology and future research will expand on the breadth of viruses which can be detected, including significant pathogenic viral threats to homeland security such as smallpox and ebola. The technology can also be applied to bacterial threats such as anthrax, plague, botulism and myriad antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including MRSA.

Customizing Molecules

Molecular imprinting is a technique used to prepare synthetic polymers with recognition sites that are specific to a target molecule. In the same way that a key must "match" a lock in order to work, the shapes, sizes and functions of these artificially generated recognition sites are matched to the target molecule and capable of rebinding them with a preference for other closely related structures.

Similar imprints are made by our immune systems; however, MIPs are more robust, stable and resistant to a wide range of humidity, temperature and acidity and alkalinity factors than their biological counterparts. Additionally, the newest MIPs are inexpensive and safe to produce and can be sprayed, printed or spin-coated onto commercial devices for the detection of a wide range of substances, compounds and biological agents.

Homeland Security and International Applications

Link Plus integrates the MIPs technology with its Advanced Wireless Communications System allowing the Company to produce custom solutions for its clients which both detect threats and provide a comprehensive monitoring and notification infrastructure for alerting and responding to threats. Link Plus is establishing a base of domestic and overseas outlets for this technology.
