Urologist Dr. J. Francois Eid Discusses the Latest Penile Pump Innovations for Erectile Dysfunction Treatment

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - March 24, 2010) -  As the director of Advanced Urological Care, and Clinical Associate Professor of Urology at Weill/Cornell Medical College in New York City, Dr. Eid knows the positive impact that erectile dysfunction treatment can make on the sufferer. He can also appreciate how difficult it is for his patients considering a penile implant to decide which device would be the best for them. Having performed over 3,000 penile prosthesis surgeries, the most in the world, Eid knows that the look, feel, ease of use and infection prevention are most important for ED sufferers and their partners. "Conquering these concerns results in normal, healthy and productive lives for my patients, and that is what I consider to be true treatment success," says Eid.

Dr. Eid's practice is dedicated to erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence treatment, with unsurpassed expertise in Inflatable Penile Prostheses (IPP) and Artificial Urinary Sphincters (AUS). Eid strongly believes in the effectiveness of IPP's, since he has performed more internal penile prosthesis surgeries than anyone in the world, over 250 per year. He developed the "No-Touch" penile implant surgery, which boasts an infection rate of less than one percent, which makes him an expert in his field.

Below are Dr. Eid's top picks for the best type and model of inflatable devices:

Internal Penile Pump™ also known as a Multi-Component Inflatable Penile Prosthesis:
This is a soft fluid-filled saline device that can expand and contract without losing elasticity. It consists of three small components: very thin tubes, the pump, and the reservoir. The reservoir contains fluid, which is transferred by the pump into the tubes, causing the penis to expand and become rigid. Once inserted the Internal Penile Pump™ is totally concealed deep in the scrotum and looks normal both in the flaccid and erect positions. Updates have been made to the IPP pumps offered by both American Medical Systems (AMS) and Coloplast Corporation. Also, AMS has added an antibiotic coating to its AUS.

Momentary Squeeze (MS) Pump - AMS
Dr. Eid has implanted AMS's Momentary Squeeze (MS) Pump with great success in many patients. The MS Pump's advantages include a more discreet placement and one-touch deflation. It has minor operational difficulties with inflation and deflation because of its smaller size; also the new lockout valve might make it difficult to initiate inflation. Because of this, Dr. Eid recommends this pump for the younger patient with an average-sized penis.

Tactile Pump (700 CX Series) - AMS
This is Dr. Eid's prosthesis of choice for the older patient where pump concealment is not an issue. The pump is large, easily palpable, is the softest to inflate and has a very large deflation footprint, which is easily accessed by the patient.

Titan Pump - Coloplast
Approved by the FDA in 2008, the new pump of the Coloplast Titan prosthesis features a one-touch-release (OTR) deflation valve. It is easy for patients to locate the pump and operate with one hand. It has a non-bulky with a low profile size. It also features enhanced silicone for increased product durability, which was an issue with previous versions. "It is a great device for the patient with a larger penis," says Dr. Eid, "as these are the only cylinders that will expand to 22mm girth." This large girth expansion provides patients with the most rigid erections. In addition, only Titan cylinders are available in lengths of 24cm, 26cm and 28cm.

Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AUS) - AMS
AMS improved the AUS by coating the device surface with Inhibizone, an antibiotic coating currently available on the IPP, dramatically reducing infection rates. With Dr. Eid's own "no-touch" surgical technique, which eliminates direct and indirect contact between the prosthesis and the patient's skin, he believes this innovation offers unparalleled protection against most infections.
