Van Andel Institute Phase II Expansion Project Prepares for Grand Opening

GRAND RAPIDS, MI--(Marketwire - November 30, 2009) - Hunt Construction Group along with joint venture partner, Owen-Aimes-Kimball, prepare for a ribbon cutting ceremony on December 8th, 2009 at the Van Andel Institute's Phase II Expansion project. This marks the end of a fast paced construction schedule lasting more than two years. The project was completed two months ahead of schedule and within budget.

The new medical research and education facility is 242,000 square feet on eight levels and triples the lab space at the Institute for expanded basic and translational research. This addition provides a significant increase to the scope of research conducted at the Van Andel Institute. Features of the project include the Jay Van Andel Parkinson's Research Lab and a new home for Van Andel Institute Graduate School with space to be utilized by students of the Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine.

The iconic building was designed by famed architect Rafael Viñoly. "Hunt has completed many research facilities similar in size and complexity to this one. The uniqueness of this project was the architectural features of the building, such as the vast amount of glass incorporated into the design," said Matthew Barnes, Vice President of Hunt Construction Group. "The Van Andel Institute should be commended for selecting a world-renowned architect such as Rafael Viñoly to design their building. It was a privilege to be a part of such grand architecture."

The structure was designed and constructed incorporating sustainable features to ensure it has a minimal impact on the environment. The Van Andel Institute's Phase II building expansion has been submitted for LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. For detailed sustainable features on this project please visit
