Veterans' Week 2007: November 5 to 11

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 5, 2007) - The Government of Canada is pleased to mark Veterans' Week 2007, from November 5 to 11. The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs will undertake a national tour to participate in local commemorative events and activities across the country. Canadians, especially youth, are encouraged to get involved in local activities that honour Canada's Veterans.

"We hope Canadians from our largest cities to our smallest villages will participate in local Veterans' Week activities," said Minister Thompson. "By doing so, we show our respect to Veterans and visibly support our men and women in uniform today."

Communities from coast to coast will take part in candlelight tributes, musical concerts, exhibitions and theatrical productions. In Ottawa, events will include a Candlelight Tribute at Lansdowne Park and the annual "Canada Remembers" theme week at Encounters with Canada. A Remembrance Ceremony was also held in the Senate of Canada on November 2. Veterans' Week will conclude with the Royal Canadian Legion's Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11 at the National War Memorial. Similar ceremonies will be held at cenotaphs in cities and towns across Canada.

Veterans Affairs Canada has also produced a package of educational materials to bring Veterans' Week and the important messages of remembrance into Canadian classrooms. All Canadians, especially youth and community organizations, are encouraged to take an active role in Veterans' Week activities in their local communities.
