Veterans' Week 2007 Poster Unveiled

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 23, 2007) - This morning the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, in the presence of students and Veterans of the Second World War, Korean War and Peacekeeping missions, unveiled the official Veterans' Week 2007 poster at Notre Dame High School.

"Canadian service men and women have a long and proud history of standing on guard for all Canadians and answering the call when their country is in need." said Minister Thompson. "The poster symbolizes the Canadian tradition of taking an active role in bringing stability and peace to parts of the world that have seen turmoil and upheaval,"

This year's poster incorporates Korean War soldiers marching to their encampment, Canadian Forces members on a training exercise before leaving for the mission in Afghanistan and a lone Second World War Veteran bowing his head in remembrance of all service men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Veterans' Week is a time to teach youth about remembrance, to honour the sacrifice and achievements of Canadian Veterans and to pay tribute to those who died protecting the freedoms we enjoy today. The Veterans' Week theme for 2007 is Lest We Forget.

"Our Government is dedicated to helping all Canadians, especially youth, understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by our Veterans," said Minister Thompson. "It is my sincerest hope that by being here today our youth realize the importance of remembrance, and that our Veterans know how grateful we are as a nation."

As a sign of Canada's commitment to remembrance, a 26' x 19' reproduction of the poster will hang on the National Arts Centre facing the National War Memorial until the end of Veterans' Week, November 5 to 11.

Each year, Veterans Affairs Canada produces a poster to create awareness and pay tribute to Veterans who have served and continue to serve Canada at home and around the world. The poster is being distributed, along with other Veterans' Week materials, to schools and Legion Branches across the country, reminding Canadians that our Veterans' achievements and sacrifice must not be forgotten.
