Via Salzburg's Tenth Anniversary Concert Opens With World Premiere of a New Work in Celebration of Toronto's 175th Anniversary

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 9, 2009) – In 1999, violinist Mayumi Seiler set out to fulfill her musical vision of a Toronto-based chamber music ensemble that would fuse the extraordinary talents of both Canadian and international musicians with string-oriented repertoire spanning from the Baroque to the contemporary. Thus was born Via Salzburg, an ensemble that now begins its eleventh season, having performed an impressive array of groundbreaking concerts to critical acclaim.

Via Salzburg will open its 2009-2010 concert season with Tradition and Change, featuring the world première of a new work inspired and conceived by historian and journalist David Macfarlane, in collaboration with composer Peter Skoggard. David Macfarlane explains the concept of this new work: The 25-minute piece has been composed in celebration of the 175th anniversary of the birth of our city and includes references to significant musical elements and historical figures of Toronto, such as Healey Willan's An Apostrophe to the Heavenly Hosts and the change-bells of St. James' Cathedral. Via Salzburg will be joined for this performance by special guest artists guitarist Kevin Breitpercussionist Rick Sacks, sound designer Lyon Smith and computer-based composer Blake MacfarlaneToronto Suite is dedicated to the memory of Gavin Relly, a dear friend of David Macfarlane's who sponsored the creation of this new work.

The first half of the programme will feature Dvoràk's Serenade Opus 22 in E Major for String Orchestra and the Canadian première of Arvo Pärt's Fratres for Violin, Strings and Percussion.
