The Ville de Montreal: Vaccination Program for Raccoons on Mount Royal Improving Animal Health

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - May 15, 2006) - The Ville de Montréal, in cooperation with Les Amis and the Centre de la montagne, is currently conducting a vaccination program for the raccoon population in Mount Royal Park to reduce disease among these animals, especially canine distemper.

"The city's major parks are brimming with rich and diversified animal life. Since these animals share these areas with humans, it is very important that they remain healthy. The vaccination program for raccoons is part of an ecological management approach developed by the city," said Helen Fotopulos, Mayor of the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough, member of the Montréal executive committee responsible for the environment, parks, green and blue spaces, Mount Royal and the status of women.

As part of the program, cages will be installed at various locations in the park between May 15 and the beginning of July, to capture, identify and vaccinate the raccoons. These cages are specially identified. Authorities ask that the public keep away from the cages and keep their dogs on a leash at all times to avoid transmission of the disease. The public's cooperation is key to ensuring the success of this vaccination program.

Les Amis and the Centre de la montagne, non-profit organizations devoted to the conservation and enhancement of Mount Royal, in association with the Ville de Montréal, will be distributing information to visitors on the vaccination program. Notices are posted in the park's main buildings and information fliers are available at Maison Smith.
