WWF-Canada: Available for Comment on Premier's Announcement re. Incentives for Electric Vehicles

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 15, 2009) - Today, Ontario Premier, Dalton McGuinty, and Minister of Transportation, Jim Bradley will announce support for Ontarians buying electric vehicles.

Transportation (including upstream emissions from mining and refining the fuel) account for 32% of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada, and these emissions have gone up by 30% since 1990.

"Transportation fuels are the largest and fastest rising source of greenhouse gas emissions. Switching to electric vehicles, powered by green power grids, is key to reducing this major contributor to climate change," said Keith Stewart, WWF-Canada. "We must break our addition to dirty oil. Investing in a green transportation plan, which includes vehicles running on electricity generated by renewable power sources, investments in public transit, and changes in how we move freight, is how we start."
