Washington DC Awards Gala to Spearhead Sport for Social Change Awards and 18 City Cup

The Awards Kick Off the Countdown to the 3-Day, 18-City Street Soccer USA Cup, to Be Held in Downtown DC, July 30th-August 1st

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - May 4, 2010) -  Street Soccer USA (SSUSA) and Help USA announce the Sport for Social Change Awards Gala to be held Thursday, May 20th, 2010. The Street Soccer USA program, which will benefit from funds raised that evening, is a national leader in the use of sport for social development. SSUSA achieves a 75% success rate in 18 cities, leveraging the power of sports to improve outcomes in education, job, and housing placement for homeless teens and adults. Recognized by the Clinton Global Initiative, the New York Times, People Magazine, and ESPN among others, SSUSA exemplifies how sport can be used for positive social change here in the United States.

Presenting the event will be Chick Hernandez of Comcast SportsNet, held under the auspices of the Secretary General to the Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Insulza, and the Ambassador of Greece, Vassilis Kaskarelis. Sports owner and AOL vice president emeritus, Ted Leonsis and HELP USA Board Chair, Maria Cuomo Cole, are chairing the event.

Honorees include Mystics Owner Sheila Johnson in the category of Philanthropy, GW Sports Alliance Founder Fernando Murias in Business Leadership, Zach Leonsis for Youth Services, and Chris Lodgeson, a SSUSA program grad, for Personal Achievement.

"The Washington DC Sport for Social Change Awards brings together some of Washington's leading political, business and community leaders," said Lawrence Cann. "It's a unique gathering of people doing good at all levels of engagement, and the common denominator is sport."

The Awards kick off the countdown to the 3-day, 18-city Street Soccer USA Cup, to be held in downtown DC, July 30th-August 1st. Just a few days after the World Cup in South Africa concludes, these athletes will play for the greatest goal of all, to overcome homelessness and poverty. The top players chosen for achievement on and off the field will be selected to represent the US Men's and Women's teams at the 48-nation Homeless World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

These series of events provides corporate sponsors a unique opportunity to support both local participants and promote their brands nationally and internationally. Considered the nation's premier sport for social change event, the SSUSA Cup receives national media exposure and attracts volunteers and attendees from all over the US.

The Street Soccer Awards Gala is to be held at the Organization of American States with a cocktail reception, awards program and dinner reception. The event is expected to sell out; tickets and tables are now available at
