'Watershed' Year in 2010 for Utility-Scale Photovoltaic Generation, an Industrial Info News Alert

LAS VEGAS, NV--(Marketwire - December 22, 2009) - Written by John Egan for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- Next year will be a "watershed" year for construction of utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) electric generation, predicted Peter Mostow, a partner at the Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati law firm. "A lot of PV projects have an in-service date of 2012, which means they have to break ground next year. Plus, critical federal tax credits supporting PV and other renewables expire at the end of 2010. To be eligible to receive those credits, projects must begin construction by the end of 2010," he told about 100 attendees at the annual Power-Gen International convention. Mostow's optimism was echoed by Matt Campbell, director of product management for SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ:SPWRA and SPWRB) (San Jose, California), a PV panel manufacturer. SunPower provided the PV arrays for the largest U.S. PV facility, Florida's 25-megawatt DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center, which was dedicated in late October by President Barack Obama and executives from Florida Power & Light, a subsidiary of FPL Group (NYSE:FPL) (Juno Beach, Florida). SunPower also has been involved in PV projects for Exelon Corporation (NYSE:EXC) (Chicago, Illinois), Xcel Energy Incorporated (NYSE:XEL) and other leading national energy companies.
