Wavesat Previews WiMAX Nomadic Chipset Targeting Wireless Laptop and PDA Applications

WIMAX WORLD EUROPE, VIENNA--(CCNMatthews - May 22, 2006) -

Designed to Upgrade WiMAX Fixed Systems to Offer Basic Mobility along with Cost Reductions, Lower Power Consumption and Small Footprint

Wavesat, leading developer of WiMAX chipset, software and development tools today announced the next step in its WiMAX Evolutive™ strategy with the upcoming OFDM basic mobility chip targeting WiMAX Nomadic and Portable applications such as wireless laptop and PDA, and is specifically designed for easy upgradeability of 802.16-2004 Fixed WiMAX systems.

Code named Shark, this next generation chipset:

- Integrates the entire Physical Layer (PHY) and H/W Media Access Control (MAC) Accelerator.

- Offers a small footprint (11x11 mm2) and ultra low power consumption ( less than 200 mW) using 0.13 Micron technology.

- Offers basic mobility capability in accordance with the WiMAX Forum 802.16e ETG profile.

- Supports Sleep Mode for enhanced power savings.

- Adds PCI core for easy interface to motherboard/application processor.

- Includes encryption core to offload the application processor.

The Shark chipset will provide WiMAX OEMs and ODMs a unique opportunity to offer enhanced nomadic indoor capability with robust subchannelization and adaptive antenna technology. Basic mobility is added through the support of hard handover and power saving mode for prolonged battery life. The Shark also provides enhanced Quality of Service (QoS) capability, Automatic Repeat-reQuest (ARQ) and functionality to optimize bandwidth usage such as payload header suppression.

Jules-Pierre Lamoureux, Wavesat CTO stated, "Our new chipset, with small form factor, ultra low power consumption and backward compatibility, exemplifies our technological leadership and commitment to deliver complete, forward looking products inline with our unique Evolutive™ strategy. This is our seventh generation chip and it goes a long way toward providing mature WiMAX solutions that meet market demands and go beyond prototypes and lab demos."

"The announcement of our next generation WiMAX baseband chipset adding basic mobility capability is another step in the fulfillment of our WiMAX product roadmap to provide a distinct solutions for each WiMAX market segment," added Vijay Dube, Wavesat VP Marketing and Business Development. "Because our technology is backward compatible with the 802.16-2004 profile, our customers using our unique WiMAX Mini-PCI CPE design will be able to easily deploy the Shark chipset to add basic mobility capability, reduce power consumption, size and overall cost of their CPE solutions. We are also working with key partners to develop very small form-factor and low cost USB-Dongle CPE designs for wireless laptops and PDAs."

Commercial samples of the Shark will be available by Q3, 2006.
