A 10-year celebration of successful healthy living programs took place in Vancouver today at the Speaking of Food and Healthy Living Awards, sponsored by Kraft Canada and Dietitians of Canada. Held in connection with the Dietitians of Canada National Conference, the Awards recognized six regional programs for their work in helping Canadians to make healthier eating and activity choices. Livin' it Up! A Wellness Program for Seniors was selected as a regional award recipient for its focus on helping older Canadians integrate healthy living into their everyday lives.

Livin' it Up! is an interactive six-week wellness program for older adults that was created by four Human Nutritional Sciences students from the University of Manitoba. The program focuses on healthy eating, physical well-being and social interaction. It targets seniors living independently who are able to perform daily tasks such as cooking, housekeeping and shopping. Participants are also given easy-to-understand healthy recipes as well as nutrition and exercise resources after every session to help them make healthy living practices a part of their daily routines.

Lee Mandock who worked with Transcona Council for Seniors and is a spokesperson for the program, was in attendance to receive the regional award title and Certificate of Merit. "Healthy eating and physical activity both play an important role in helping seniors stay healthy. However, many seniors are not meeting their daily nutritional requirements. Many seniors are also inactive," says Mandock. "To be honoured for this initiative helps reinforce the importance of finding innovative ways to support older Canadians in their quest to live healthier lives."
