Xebec Could Be Prime Beneficiary of New NARUC Resolution in the U.S. Supporting Pipeline Quality Biomethane as Renewable Gas Resource

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - March 1, 2010) - Xebec Adsorption Inc. (TSX:XBC) ("Xebec"), a provider of biogas upgrading, natural gas and hydrogen purification solutions for the clean energy market, disclosed today the company could be a prime beneficiary of a new policy resolution announced earlier this month – by the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) in the U.S. – to support pipeline quality biomethane development as a renewable gas resource in the clean energy economy.

The NARUC resolution on biomethane urged the U.S. Congress to pass legislation to provide "unequivocal support for pipeline quality biomethane development in order to achieve significant greenhouse gas reductions in the transition to a clean energy economy." The association asked that federal incentives for the development of pipeline quality biomethane gas be provided on a par with incentives afforded for other resources for producing renewable electricity.

In its resolution, NARUC noted that "emerging renewable sources of natural gas have great potential to complement the critical role of traditional natural gas suppliers in the clean energy economy." In addition, it stated that biogas, primarily methane, derived from organic materials through anaerobic digestion and thermal gasification "can be captured, cleaned and converted into biomethane through the use of proven gas conditioning technologies, transported by the existing gas pipeline system, stored and/or delivered for productive use in renewable electricity generation, clean transportation, or commercial, industrial and residential end use."

Studies show that in most industrialized countries low carbon "green gas" can be substituted for 10 to 15 percent of total natural gas usage, which utilities can inject, distribute and sell for a premium in traditional ways, such as electricity generation, vehicle fuel and heating."

"It takes methane gas collected from more than 300 extraction wells at a landfill site and removes carbon dioxide and other contaminants from the gas before it travels through a 12.7 mile pipeline to the university's cogeneration plant."
