Xstrata Copper Doubles Contributions to Social Organizations in Canadian Communities

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Oct. 3, 2007) - Xstrata Copper Canada announces it is more than doubling its financial commitments to organizations in communities where it has mining and/or metallurgical operations. Donations in 2007 will reach approximately Cdn$ 800,000.

The greatly increased donations in Canada are part of Xstrata Copper Canada's enhanced community commitment recently formalized through a Corporate Social Involvement Policy that Xstrata Copper has applied worldwide. The policy was introduced into Canadian operations in 2007.

True partnership and involvement

The policy reflects Xstrata Copper's approach to community involvement - much more than simply giving money away. It emphasizes consultation with local communities and employees; transparent and frequent communications; addressing community issues; respect of culture, history, values and customs; sustainability; strengthening local economies; and creation of employment and development opportunities.

"Communities where Xstrata operates will see their donations and sponsorship contribution increase compared to previous years," announced Claude Ferron, COO Xstrata Copper Canada, "because Xstrata considers community involvement a pillar of its worldwide presence."

Major donations announced in Timmins, Rouyn-Noranda and Montreal-East

The Canadian communities to benefit are in Timmins, Ontario, where Xstrata Copper operates the Kidd Mine and Metallurgical Site; Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, site of the Horne Smelter; and eastern Montreal, location of the Canadian Copper Refinery.

"Xstrata Copper Canada has always been committed to the communities in which it operates," said Claude Ferron. "These new community partnerships will allow us to contribute even more to their social, economic and institutional development, and to improve their quality of life."

Timmins

In Timmins, the company's community investment is expected to total close to $300,000. Major community partners will include the Northern College Foundation, which receives a Cdn$150,000 donation over three years towards the purchase of lab equipment for its industrial sciences programs; the Porcupine Ski Runners, the area's cross-country ski club, which will benefit from Cdn$50,000 to support construction of a new chalet building; United Way, to which Xstrata employee donations will be matched dollar for dollar again this year - 2006 donations reached Cdn$60,000.

Rouyn-Noranda

Xstrata Copper Canada will invest more than Cdn$125,000 in Rouyn-Noranda. It will partner, among others, with l'Association pour l'integration sociale by contributing Cdn$100,000 to the association's Maison repit-depannage, a project to convert a house into a respite centre to help families supporting people with various handicaps. Le Marche public du Vieux Noranda, a seasonal local produce market, is another partner who will receive $25,000.

Eastern Montreal

In Eastern Montreal, a partnership with la Commission scolaire de la Pointe-de-l'Ile will help tackle the serious school drop-out rate through three different programs, with a contribution of Cdn$105,000. La Fondation du Centre jeunesse de Montreal will receive Cdn$15,000 to offer weekly or day camps for youth in institutional foster care. Xstrata Copper will also provide Cdn$30,000, in three instalments, to Jeunes en Mouvement, an organization dedicated to the 12 to 17 year old age group, providing services to teenagers and their parents in order to foster autonomy, support education and offer psychosocial intervention.
