Younger in Yonkers: Joseph W. Shannon III Celebrates 50 Years With Con Edison

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - December 28, 2009) - Joe Shannon has joined an elite group of 21 active Con Edison employees with over 50 years of service at the New York utility.

Currently serving as a commercial technical representative in Bronx-Westchester Electric Operations, Shannon was out of the Army two and a half weeks when he took a bus from his home in Yonkers to a nearby Con Edison facility in Mount Vernon 50 years ago. In a tableau unimaginable today, he was hired on the spot and asked to start work immediately, asking only to be allowed to go home to change clothes before beginning underground work on the electric system.

He's never looked back.

"Joe Shannon brings a wealth of information and dedication about the company and its service to customers, and is one of the few who consistently raise the bar with a commitment to excellence," said engineering supervisor Paul Smith. "Joe has worked on everything from electric operations, to energy audits, to solar water heating studies, to gas diagnostic work, to customer accounting, and he shares information in a very skillful and understated manner. He embodies what Customer Service means in a bottom-line way, something that's invaluable to our commercial customers."

In an era when lengthy tenures work against employees in some corporate cultures, Con Edison continues to underscore the value of longtime service within its workforce. The company's consistent ranking as one of the world's most reliable utilities benefits from the institutional memory and seasoned perspective of longtime employees like Shannon, especially given the challenging nature of operating in a complicated underground environment.

The Bronx-born Shannon has another association of even greater significance that's almost equally long: his 46-year marriage to wife Cathey. They have three children, still live in Yonkers, and have three grandchildren as well.
