Zoran Launches Inferno, Linux®-Based Firmware Platform for Printers, MFPs and Scanners

New Platform Provides Easy Integration of New Technologies for Advanced Features and Improved Performance

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwire - April 19, 2010) -  Zoran Corporation (NASDAQ: ZRAN) is now shipping Inferno, a new Linux-based firmware platform for its Quatro® family of processors that allows manufacturers to easily integrate new technologies supporting advanced features and improved performance in printers, multi-function printers (MFPs) and scanners.

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are under constant competitive pressure to quickly build more full-featured, faster printers, MFPs and scanners at lower price points. Traditionally, OEMs have used closed, proprietary environments. Zoran's Inferno product takes a new direction using Embedded Linux, the popular open source environment, which provides a richer selection of features, applications and tools for developing next-generation printers, MFPs and scanners with improved performance.

Benefits of Inferno's new Linux-based approach

  • OEMs can achieve maximum printing performance with minimum effort because Inferno incorporates an application programming interface (API) for integrating Zoran's IPS print language interpreter software. The API allows OEMs to easily configure the software for specific print engines and improve performance in new product designs.
  • Zoran developed an innovative, tiered print engine driver with a real-time layer that runs on the Quatro® processor's flexRISC cores and a thin interface layer that runs in the Linux kernel, boosting real-time accuracy and keeping OEMs' proprietary code separated from the open source Linux kernel.
  • OEMs can build a wide range of entry-level to high-performance devices and add interactive touch display, energy efficient sleep mode, gigabit Ethernet, IPsec network security, complete print language support and other features as needed.

"Embedded device manufacturers are increasingly adopting SOCs with fully programmable processor cores and IP that enable features specific to the application," said Shane Rau, Research Director of Computing and Storage Semiconductors at IDC. "For example, IDC predicts that SOC adoption by MFP makers will increase from approximately 50% in 2009 to 80% in 2014. These SOCs will enable developers to build MFPs that run high-level operating systems and support features such as enhanced user interactivity, greater enterprise and mobile connectivity, and higher performance."

"Zoran uses Embedded Linux as the foundation of our new Inferno platform because its advanced multiprocessing support best meets our customers' demand to quickly build high-performance, feature-rich products using Quatro's multicore CPU. This is a continuation of our initiative to take full advantage of multicore technology, which provides higher performance with lower cost and better energy efficiency when compared to single-core CPU architectures," said Simon Dolan, senior vice president and general manager, Zoran's Imaging Division.

Zoran's Inferno is available now for the Quatro® 4300 and 4500 series processors. Updated releases that include new features and performance enhancements are issued three times per year. For more information, please visit www.zoran.com or contact a sales representative at 781-791-6000.
