A Great Resume is Your Best Marketing Tool

NEW YORK, NEW YORK--(Marketwired - July 9, 2013) - A resume is more than just a list of things that you have done. It is your best tool to help you land the ideal job or career. A good resume is the key to helping you get the interview, which is why it's important to make a good first impression!

First thing's first: be honest and factual. Keep your content up-to-date and don't exaggerate your experiences. After all, you want to ensure that you're a good fit and that you can do the job as much as the employer does. Your resume should have all the vitals - this is what will help set you and the competition apart - so be sure to include:

  • The little but important stuff: your name, address and personal telephone and email. Don't put your work phone or email - this is not professional.
  • Work experience, starting with the most recent first. Include information on your exact job title, the company name, the period of employment and a description of your role, responsibilities, skills you developed and your achievements.
  • What makes you right for the job? Include all your qualifications and education in chronological order.
  • What skills can you bring to the company? Consider your language or computer skills.
  • If common in your industry, include hobbies and attach references.
  • Make your resume findable: use keywords that relate to the job, which are usually given in the job description. Many companies today use search engines to find candidates from a database.

Your resume should be well-structured, clear and concise - no longer than 2 - 3 pages. When it comes to language, be formal and clear, avoiding the use of too much jargon and too many abbreviations, not to mention incorrect spelling and poor grammar. While fancy and gimmicky fonts may seem attractive, they are hard to read and unprofessional, so stick to a standard font. And always remember to include a cover letter; it is your chance to engage your potential employer.
