A lifetime of Embracing Co-operative Daycare Recognized

GUELPH, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 20, 2005) - Last night, one of Ontario's most dedicated co-operative child care advocates received provincial recognition from her peers. Carol Brown, of the City of Kawartha Lakes, received the Ontario Co-operative Association Lifetime Achievement Award at the 7th annual SPIRIT Awards, as part of a provincial Co-operative Gala held in Burlington, ON.

Brown comes to co-op daycare naturally. Her family has a long history of involvement in the co-op sector, so it was natural that her son, Andrew, be enrolled in St. Andrew's Co-op Playschool in Markham. From a participating parent, to joining boards of directors, to eventually filling the role of executive director, Brown has embraced the co-operative daycare sector.

With a teacher's certificate, and an Early Childhood Education degree from Seneca College, she tirelessly promotes the co-op model for daycare - and for other business cases. Brown's sphere of influence ranges from local preschools, to national and international service through the Ontario
Co-operative Association and PCPI (Parent Co-operative Preschools International.)

As education chair for OPPCEO (Organization for Parent Participant in Childcare and Education, Ontario), Brown supports and advances parent co-ops across the country through writing, editing and revising many of the resources that are available to local co-ops. Maria Campbell of PCPI comments, "Communication, flexibility and endless care in the most basic of details have made Brown a model for co-operatives."

Still, daycare remains true to Brown's heart. "I would like to see every community in the province of Ontario with a licensed preschool program that is accessible and affordable to every family. That is my dream."
