A New Face for Agricultural Science at Lethbridge Research Centre

LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Sept. 12, 2011) - The Lethbridge Research Centre will get much needed renovations with a new strategic investment. Member of Parliament Jim Hillyer (Lethbridge), on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and the Minister of Public Works and Government Services Rona Ambrose, today announced an investment of almost $4 million for work to upgrade the facility's exterior walls that will reduce its heating and cooling costs.

"Our Government's top priority is the economy, and the Lethbridge Research Centre is a key contributor to the competitiveness and profitability of the agriculture industry in Canada," said MP Hillyer. "Thanks to this strategic investment, this facility will be able to reduce heating and cooling costs while continuing to develop new technologies that benefit Canadian farmers."

Following a fair, open and transparent process, on May 30, 2011, Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) awarded a contract valued at $3.9 million to Chandos Construction of Calgary, Alberta, to perform the work.

"This contract is a major construction project for the Lethbridge area and will further improve the occupational health and safety for employees at this premier research centre," said Dr. Brian Freeze, Research Manager at Lethbridge. "Alternate workspace arrangements will ensure the important work at the centre goes uninterrupted," Dr. Freeze said.

Lethbridge Research Centre is AAFC's flagship research centre in the west for sustainable beef cattle research and regional crop breeding for forages, winter wheat, soft white wheat, beans, bio-mass crops (Triticale) and potatoes. The new exterior walls for the administrative block are expected to be in place by December 2013.
