A New Monument Will Pay Tribute to the 125th Anniversary of the Stanley Cup

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - March 18, 2016) - Department of Canadian Heritage

David McGuinty, Member of Parliament (Ottawa South), announced $2.15 million in funding from the Government of Canada's for the creation of the Lord Stanley's Gift Monument.

Mr. McGuinty made this announcement on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. He was joined by Jim Watson, Mayor of the City of Ottawa; George Hunter, Vice-President and Chairman of the Lord Stanley Memorial Monument Inc.; and representatives of the Ottawa Senators hockey team and the National Hockey League. The monument will contribute to an increased knowledge and awareness of the importance of Lord Stanley's gift to our country's sport heritage. The original Stanley Cup was displayed for the occasion.

• The Lord Stanley's Gift Monument will be a public work of art that will pay tribute to the 125^th anniversary of the Stanley Cup-gifted by Lord Stanley, Canada's sixth Governor General, in 1892.
