A Shared Vision, Beyond Habitat

REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwired - Nov. 6, 2014) - With water management and water quality issues top of mind for many people in Saskatchewan, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is encouraged by the proactive steps the Government of Saskatchewan is taking in conserving important wetlands and associated habitats.

"DUC is encouraged by the commitment made in the recent throne speech to see new regulations governing drainage developed as part of the government's 25-Year Saskatchewan Water Security Plan," says Brian Hepworth, Manager of Provincial Operations for DUC in Saskatchewan. "Wetlands are intrinsic to the continued success and growth of the province. We look forward to working with the government and the Ministry of Environment on this important file."

Mark Wartman, Regional Vice President of Nature Conservancy Canada (NCC) for the Saskatchewan Region says, "Wetlands are important to the biodiversity of Saskatchewan and we are pleased to hear that the government is developing new regulations which will protect and improve the health of Saskatchewan's wetlands." The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) is also encouraged by the announcement. "Wetlands provide important habitat for our fish and game species," says David Pedzeric, the organization's President. "This is an important step in the protection of this valuable resource."

"DUC supports the development of a new provincial wetland policy, and will continue to invest in conservation programming that will complement other work led by our conservation partners and the government," says Hepworth. "DUC looks forward to the opportunity to work with all levels of government and other partners to ensure Canada's natural areas are protected for generations to enjoy."

Wetlands play an important role in protecting our communities' water supplies, recreational opportunities, and our provinces' infrastructure. They enhance the quality of life for all Saskatchewanians.

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is the leader in wetland conservation. A registered charity, DUC partners with government, industry, other non-profit organizations and landowners to conserve wetlands that are critical to waterfowl, wildlife and the environment. Learn more at www.ducks.ca.
