AAA Texas: Weekend Gas Watch

Pump Prices Only Pennies From Breaking Record

HOUSTON, TX -- (MARKET WIRE) -- July 28, 2006 -- After five straight weeks of increases, Texas pump prices are only pennies away from hitting their all-time record highs, according to AAA Texas' Weekend Gas Watch.

The statewide average price is $2.916 a gallon -- up nearly two cents. Corpus Christi has the lowest average at $2.833, despite a seven cent weekly increase. The Galveston-Texas city area has the highest average on the list at $2.940 a gallon -- the same as last week.

"Strong consumer demand for gasoline, tight inventories plus the ongoing violence in the Middle East have continued to keep crude oil prices above $70 a barrel," said Rose Rougeau, spokesperson for AAA Texas. "Despite paying $3 or more for a gallon of gasoline, Americans' thirst for fuel has not slowed down. This summer, demand for gas in the U.S. is about two percent higher than last year."

The national average for regular self-serve gasoline is $3.006 a gallon -- up about two cents.

AAA Texas' Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline in Texas.
