AAFC: $1.5 Million Invested in Canadian Beef Exports

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Sept. 21, 2007) - The Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board today announced $1.5 million in funding to the Canada Beef Export Federation to boost exports of Canadian beef products.

"Canada's New Government is pleased to support our beef exporters as they look to expand trade for Canadian beef across Asia and in Mexico," said Minister Ritz. "This funding will help our beef producers to expand into existing markets and develop new ones."

The Canada Beef Export Federation (CBEF) represents 90 per cent of Canada's beef and veal processing capacity. With the help of the funding announced today, the federation intends to make Canada the third largest supplier of imported beef in the Asian and Mexican markets by 2015 through cooperation with locally engaged market experts.

"By working with all sectors of the beef industry, including producers, packers, processors and exporters, we will succeed at creating new market opportunities," said CBEF President, Ted Haney. "Through our commitment to safety and quality, Canadian beef will continue to be a symbol of excellence in the global marketplace."

These funds are provided to CBEF through the Canadian Agriculture and Food International (CAFI) program which provides matching funding for industry activities that enhance and promote Canada's reputation in international markets.
