AAFC: Federal Funding Supports Canadian Young Farmers

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - June 9, 2005) - Agriculture and Agri-food Minister Andy Mitchell today reaffirmed the Government of Canada's commitment to our young farmers. The Canadian Young Farmers' Forum (CYFF) will receive $228, 500 to carry out numerous activities, including organizational development, membership recruitment, networking, meeting and project management.

This funding was allocated under the Renewal Chapter from the Agricultural Policy Framework (APF).

"I believe Canada's young farmers have a unique perspective on the issues facing the agriculture industry," says Minister Mitchell. "A young farmer's network will be valuable in helping to bring their voices to the forefront and prepare them for successful careers in agriculture and agri-food."

The CYFF facilitates the exchange of information between young and beginning farmers from across Canada. The organization targets farmers between the ages of 18 and 40 and provides an opportunity to network and serves as a hands-on training ground for future involvement in agricultural organizations.

"CYFF is very pleased that the Government of Canada has continued its commitment to the future of agriculture by providing funding for this year," says Rod Scarlett, General Manager, CYFF. "We will work toward solidifying and strengthening this relationship for years to come."

Since its inception in 1997, CYFF has received funding through Canadian Adaptation and Rural Development (CARD) that has been replaced by the Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Agri-food Program (ACAAF) and the Renewal element.

One of the key elements of the APF is renewal of the Agriculture sector. The Renewal element provides farmers with the skills, knowledge and tools they need to be successful, both in today's market and well into the future.
