AAFC: Pre-Meeting Ministerial Statement

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 28, 2008) - The Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board, today issued the following statement regarding an upcoming meeting between the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) and industry groups, producers, grain handlers and malting companies to discuss the future of the barley industry.

"Tomorrow's meeting will focus on finding ways to achieve marketing freedom for barley growers. I am looking forward to getting the key barley industry players and farm groups in a room with the CWB to discuss some real options that will deliver marketing choice.

"Both farmers and industry have expressed the desire for marketing freedom. This meeting will allow them to share their ideas with the CWB on how to get there. Farmers and industry will also get the chance to discuss the problems they see with the CashPlus program.

"Farmers demand and deserve accurate and transparent price signals back to the farm gate. This Government is determined, from the Prime Minister down, to deliver on that for our producers.

"Tomorrow, we will discuss the industry's concerns and a plan to move forward on marketing freedom as soon as possible for Western barley producers. I look forward to the outcome of our discussions."
